At the University of Glasgow are designing a single-pixel camera to create 3D images

A team of scientists from the University of Glasgow (United Kingdom) has developed a single-pixel camera to generate 3D images, which is cheaper than the current digital and also allows you to see beyond the visible light spectrum.

The single-pixel camera offers a variety of alternatives and application areas as it could be used in areas such as medicine, geology or engineering.Another advantage provided is the low cost and the rapidity with which is capable of generating images.

For its design, the scientists used light detectors a single pixel, rather than the millions of pixels that are needed for existing image sensors of digital cameras,a light projector and a computer.

The researchers say that a single pixel detectors can see beyond the visible light frequencies, reaching wavelengths of X-rayThis would open up new uses for 3D images in a variety of sectors such as geophysics or medicine. It might even help doctors to detect tumors.Glasgow University 1 pixel 3D camera-2

In addition, the solution that the team from the University of Glasgow offers is much cheaper than a digital camera,as there are no lenses or equipment or laser.

Light patterns

In the experiment, researchers placed four cameras around an object and projected patterns of light on it,throwing fast sequences, similar to the typical pattern of black and white squares of crossword puzzles.Once they had recorded the reflected light intensities, the information was entered into a computer and patterns ran an algorithm to produce a 2D image.

To create the 3D image, the results of the other three detectors were combined as if it were a collage that creates depth,ie used the different shades of shadows and shades to generate it.The technique is known as shape from shade (shadow form).

A conventional 3D imaging system requires a high degree of calibration and accuracy for turning information into a 2D image into 3D. However, the system of a single pixel cameras do not require as much calibration to create the images with very similar results in terms of accuracy. And the time it takes to create is only a few seconds.

Affordable digitalSLR or digital camera ,etc

This is not too easy, but there might be an answer. In short, the digital SLR's are over $700, the manual zoom digicams are about the same price and not much smaller but have less depth of field control. They're often slower also, but have longer range lenses.
The only really fast smaller cameras I've found were the Ricoh Caplio and some Sony's, most smaller digital cameras seemd to have bad "shutter lag" delay between pressing the button and the shutter actually firing.

  • Avatar Noah I am looking for a cheap digital camera. What are the best ones?

I would like to buy a cheap digital camera for less than £50, what sort of features should I be looking for? Could you recommend one in particular?

    • Don't know how much US dollars are f50. But if it's less than $100- look for a Canon point and shoot that has at least an image stabilizer feature. It may help when You shoot blurry shots. You must keep camera very steady …er helps.
Do not buy GE, Kodak, Vivitar, Sanyo Ben Q or Lomo brand cameras.
PS- When shooting in dim light always use flash or you will get blurry photo. Flash would probably go out 10 to 13 feet from camera.
